Why Renaissance is my favorite candy

candy-imageThere are so many new skincare products made for Black women, that sometimes I feel like I’m in a candy store and want to try everything I see! Since the beginning, Skin PhD had always had the Renaissance line to serve the skin care needs of Black women, and women of color.  The most unique thing about Renaissance is that many of their key ingredient are botanicals traditional to Africa, and have been  used there for generations.

Kalahari Melon

African Kalahari Melon extract  helps to protect against the appearance of UV and free-radical damage, similar to Vitamin C. It’s also rich in Vitamin B6. The Kalahari Melon extract in Skin PhD Renaissance products is concentrated, which is a good thing!

Marula Oil

Marula is a small golden fruit, indigenous to South Africa. Archaeological evidence shows the Marula tree is as old as 10,000 years B.C. The oil comes from the kernel inside the fruit; It’s more nutrient rich than argon oil and can be used on the whole body.

Pregnancy and skin care

Portrait of pregnant African womanPregnancy is no joke. I’m currently pregnant with my first child, a baby girl and now know this from experience. I only have one more month with the love of my life inside me and get more excited by the day, but watching your body go through so many changes can be stifling; I’m sure any mother would agree.

I was always one of those women who follow a skin care regiment, but during my pregnancy, my skin type changed. I noticed my neck and chest got much darker than my face. I also was very dry, especially my lips, and of course, stretch marks are a given.

My doctor told me a lot of these skin changes were due to the hormones raging inside me and that the dryness and discoloration would most likely go after the baby.  He also told me the stretch marks should become less noticeable after the baby too, but the better I take care of my skin, the lesser chance they have of hanging around post-pregnancy; which brings me to the meat of my rants.

I haven’t really been doing much for my discoloration. I’m very confident that it will go away after the baby. I say this because the discoloration solely a result from hormone imbalance.  If you were pregnant and you still have discoloration caused by the pregnancy, try Skin PhD’s Pigmentation control.  I like this cream because it naturally stops skin cells from overproducing melanin.

10952647_sAn uneven skin tone is enough to  kill your  vibe on any day.  Sometimes,  dark patches seem to appear out of no where, even when you think you’ve done everything right!.  Normally,  when get dark spots, it’s because I popped a pimple and it left a mark,  but you can also get dark spots from scars  that aren’t healing properly, and even from the sun     (normally dark spots from the sun tend to look like freckles).  You’ve probably read many different articles, and tried a few products to make your  dark spots go away;  many of which probably haven’t helped you.  If you’re still up for the challenge, then keep reading,  because I have a triple threat, skincare cocktail that will finally give you the results you want!

pap_enzyDark spots are caused by  an accumulation of dead skin cells caused by damage; it could be from a scar,  the sun, etc.  In order to jump start the fading process,  you need an exfoliant that is safe enough to use everyday without irritation, and one that effectively rids your skin of dead skin cells.  My favorite exfoliator is the Papaya Enzymatic Exfoliator.  If you want to learn why I love this one, click here to read all about it!

Next,  in order to fade dark spots and even your skin tone,  you’ll need a skin toner.  Thereren_even_tone are many different toners to choose from,   but for people with dark skin,  you’ll need a toner that slows the reproduction of melanocytes in your skin.   This is because, after we exfoliate, new skin cells are going to come to the skin’s surface, and since we’re trying to fade dark spots and even the skin tone,   it helps to slow melanocytes down,  at least until the dark spots disappear.  My favorite toner is the Even Tone Day Serum. Three ways to keep glowing, radiant skin in the Fall

Before you know it, leaves will go from green to gold and pumpkin scented candles will  be in every store you walk into.  Don’t assume that just because it’s not warm, you can’t keep a healthy glow to your skin. The secret to radiant skin is healthy skin.  Here are three ways to keep your skin radiant, even in the Fall.

 

1. Moisturize and hydrate

Here are three best ways to keep the skin healthy, youthful and radiant all summer long.

 

Exfoliate and cleanse

It’s important to exfoliate and cleanse because of the foods that traditionally come with the season. Barbecue, ice cream and slushies, are just some of the foods we eat more frequently  in the summer  that can be high in fat, sugar and sodium, which will show up on your face without regular exfoliation and cleansing.

Hydrate

Hydrating  the skin is especially important because hydrated skin will heal faster, and look more radiant than poorly hydrated skin.  This is especially important in the summer because you sweat a lot more, which means the body looses fluid at a faster rate, and sun is more likely tan your skin, which may also cause dryness, peeling and irritation.

Moisturize

Sometimes it’s hard to keep your skin moisturized in  the warm season. Many moisturizers will sit on top of the skin, in the summer due to  excessive perspiration.  Because of this, it’s is best to moisturize at night.  This will give the skin a chance to absorb the moisture without perspiration interference.  Moisturized skin will stay hydrated longer, and will lead to a more even skin tone and less peeling and irritation when tanning.

Five little known benefits of black tea for your skin

It comes from the a small shrub scientifically known as Camellia sinensis.  Black, white, and green tea all come from the same plant, but black tea leaves are aged longer than white and green tea leaves, which gives it  a stronger flavor and rich color.

I could ramble on the taste of tea long enough to write a novel,  but what’s more interesting is what this tasty leaf can do for your skin.  When black tea ferments, it’s normally referred to as kombucha.  Kombucha is known to  have many benefits for the skin when applied topically.

Why night time is the best time to care for our skin

full_mon_skyI’ve heard some skin care experts say that the time of day you choose to do your skin care regiment is insignificant, it makes no difference.  I HIGHLY disagree  with this, partly from research, but mostly from personal experience.  Let me share with you a little bit about my skin type.  I have had eczema ever since I can remember. When I was a child it was terrible, but now I usually  only get small breakouts at the beginning of the season’s change.  I also have very sensitive skin, and for a long time I couldn’t use many store brand soaps, and I could never wear perfume.  So I started caring for my skin at night out of convenience at first, but over time I really began to see a difference in my skin’s health by doing my beauty regiment at night, versus during the day.

sleeping-378x379Night time, or right before you go to sleep is the best time to do your skin care regiment for many reasons. In the morning you’re sweating, you’re wearing makeup, you’re moving around, you may even be around smoke, or having a cigarette yourself.  All these factors take away from your skins ability to replenish itself during the day.

Night is a much better time to moisturize and exfoliate because it is more likely that things like pollution, sweat, and makeup won’t be effecting your skin at this time and it will really have time to rest. Your skin will have an opportunity to take full advantages of the products your using.  Here are some great products to invest in for your night time regiment:

Three ways to keep your skin from having a Fall meltdown!

Fall is actually my favorite season:the best clothes the best colors, and the best weather, but sometimes  the dry air and cool temperatures can really dry out your skin.  Here are three ways for us to combat the fall dry-out.

1. Use thick moisturizers at night. Doing this will allow your skin to soak up as much moisture as possible with out interruption from things like the sun, sweat, smoke, and any of the other elements that may cause harm to our skin.  Pay special attention to parts of your skin that feel extra dry, or that are already peeling.  Skin PhD replenishing night cream is made with shea butter and marula oil, and is great for our skin no matter the season.

2. Exfoliate, 2-3 times a week. For some, this number could even be reduced to  1-2 times a week.  excessive exfoliating could cause your skin to peel from lack of moisture; on the flip side, not exfoliating enough could cause breakouts and make it hard to hydrate healthy skin.  Start with twice a week and see how your skin reacts. If you feel too dry, then lower your exfoliating to once a week. If you feel oily, or if your skin starts to look scaly, the up to thee times a week.  Skin PhD has a lot of great exfoliators for our skin; my favorite is the papaya exfoliator.

3. Don’t use hard soaps on your skin, especially your face.  Hard soaps, filled with perfume and sulfurs are always harsh on skin, but they become even more detrimental once the seasons change and cool weather starts to take its toll.  Use moisturizing soaps instead.  You will see a drastic difference in the tightness of your skin after cleansing.  My favorite is the foaming facial wash with marula oil; I have extremely sensitive skin, and this  cleanser leaves my skin feeling clean and hydrated with no irritation.

Acne-scar-fade-creams-for-black-women1: Discoloration For black women, discoloration can occur in two ways.  Sometimes little spots on the face that to look like freckles are really age spots that occur because of sun damage on our skin.  Another form of discoloration is pigmentation that seems to be concentrated in specific areas of the skin. For example, the area around the eyes,  mouth or neck might suddenly become darker than the rest of you face.

2. Dryness Sometimes as we age, the skin can inherit a seemingly permanent dry feeling. No matter how moisturized the skin is, it still doesn’t seem as bright and soft as it might have been at a younger age.

3: Peeling Peeling is a great indicator of dryness as well, but it is also a sign of irritated skin or skin that has suffered from inflammation, adult breakouts, and sun damage. As African American women, we have been led to believe that environmental elements like the sun cause no damage, but actually, the sun plays a great role in aging our skin as well.

Here’s how to fight it:

2: Tone No, i don’t mean grab those weights sitting on the floor in your living room. When it comes to your skin, toning refers to the process of keeping the skin on your face as close to the same color as possible.  It can be a challenge to keep the two-tone effect from happening to our skin and not all toners are created for African American women’s needs.  The secret is to find a toner that fights the production of overactive melanocytes in order to stop the formation of age spots and discoloration around the neck, eyes and mouth.

Watermelon is high in carotenoids

Carotenoids (7,481 mcg per cup) are actually what gives the watermelon its beautiful reddish color.  Your body uses carotenoids to make other useful antioxidants. Antioxidants dramatically reduce inflammation and skin cell damage by absorbing free radical oxygen atoms in your body and on your skin (when topically applied).
