The Great Benefits of Exfoliation

by Holly Harmon, Master Aesthetician and Executive Director of Training for Placécol USA.

We often find in the aesthetics profession that many of our clients do not understand the importance of making exfoliation a part of their weekly skin care regimen.  What does exfoliation do?  The term exfoliation refers to the sloughing or peeling away of the horny layer or outer layer of the skin, also known as the corneum.  An exfoliant is a particular ingredient that facilitates this process.

Let’s look at the skin cells journey:  new skin cells are created in the skin’s lower layer, the dermis. Over time, cells migrate to the surface of the skin and become more acidic. During their 30 day journey, they die and become saturated with keratin. Keratin is important because it protects the skin from outside elements. Through the ageing process, and after menopause for women, the natural process of skin erosion becomes uneven, which gives skin a dry and rough character. Exfoliation removes the outer layer to reveal the newer skin beneath. This shedding of the outer layer unclogs pores, keeps skin clean and more youthful/healthy in appearance, and helps reduce acne breakouts. There are different types of exfoliants, ranging from chemical, acidic, or enzymatic exfoliants to mechanical exfoliation (such as microdermabrasion).

Chemical exfoliants include scrubs, serums or gels containing salicylic acid, glycolic acid, fruit enzymes, citric acid, or malic acid which may be applied in high concentrations by a dermatologist or in lower concentrations in over-the-counter products. Chemical exfoliation may also involve the use of products that contain alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) that act to weaken the bonds that  holds the skin cells together and sloughs them away more readily.

Why is it vital to skin health?  There are great benefits of exfoliation.  Women have exfoliated their skin for centuries.  In fact, credit is given to the ancient Egyptians for the practice of exfoliation.  Proper and habitual exfoliating can improve dull, lifeless skin tone; oily, clogged pores with minor acne, blackheads and/or whiteheads; dehydrated skin with cell build-up and flakiness; and in some cases, improve fine lines and wrinkles.  Just remember… “you must remove to improve!”

While we recommend a professional facial at least once per month or once every other month for skin health and we absolutely recommend that you exfoliate two times per week.1

This is your facial at home!  Placécol has several exfoliating options for your skin-specific needs.  Two of Placécol’s exfoliants are rich in alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs).  The skin-rejuvenating properties of certain AHA’s have been known for centuries. Cleopatra bathed in sour milk, which contains lactic acid, and the women of the French court washed their faces in spoiled wine, which contains tartaric acid.  AHA’s are weak organic acids. They are naturally found throughout nature in sugar cane as glycolic acid, in sour milk as lactic acid, and in fruits as malic, citric and tartaric acids.  The principal cosmetic actions of AHA’s on the skin are increased exfoliation and moisturization. The moisturizing qualities of cosmetic AHA’s help diminish the appearance of fine lines and help maintain the skin’s proper moisture level.   Low concentration AHA’s facilitate shedding of the outer layer of the epidermis resulting in cosmetically improved skin with a radiant, youthful glow to the skin.  With proper and regular exfoliation, your skin will radiate a healthy glow. Visible improvements appear in skin texture, smoothness, and overall skin health.

Placecol’s Gentle Exfoliating Serum contains AHA’s origin form red berries such Blackcurrant and Bilberry, containing citric acid, glycolic acid, lactic acid and malic acid. These red fruits are rich in sugars, minerals and vitamin C, an active stimulant for cell regeneration that protects the skin against free radicals.  It also contains glycoproteins which increase cell turnover and cell proliferation while stimulating the skin’s immunosystem.

ahaPlacécol’s AHA Exfoliating Cream is rich in Bilberry, Sugar Cane, Sugar Maple, Orange and Lemon extract it is also enriched with Shea butter for additional mildness on the skin.  This concentrated blend of five botanical extracts contains several naturally occurring alpha hydroxyl acids.  These extracts contain a wide variety of residual natural substances, such as cellulose, carbohydrates, proteins, water soluble vitamins and minerals.  The primary action of AHA’s lies in their keratolytic ability – they weaken bonds that hold dead skin cells together. When these bonds are weakened, the dead skin cells can be shed from the surface of the skin, resulting in skin that appears fresher, smoother and younger.

This natural fruit acid blend also helps to normalize and improve the production of new skin cells, while the addition of Shea butter nourishes and conditions the skin, leaving it in superlative condition.  Suitable for dry, sensitive skin.

gentle-exfoliatorPlacécol’s Platinum Gentle Exfoliator with Papaya is a unique and highly effective exfoliator that uses papaya as the fruit acid exfoliator.  This highly effective exfoliator is designed for mature/dry skin with changing hormone levels and appearance of fine lines & wrinkles.  It contains super hydrating Ximenia Oil and Calendula Oil leaving your skin more youthful in appearance, toned, hydrated, and rejuvenated.

The regular use of products such as Placecol’s Gentle Exfoliating Serum, AHA Exfoliating Cream,  or the Platinum Gentle Exfoliator with Papaya make skin appear fresher, smoother and younger while at the same time releasing the benefits of hydration and collegen sythesis from lactic and citric acids. These products are effective yet gentle enough as to not over-exfoliate or break down the skins natural protection and impeded cellular function while improving the over-all health of your skin.  A simple addition of a good exfoliator to your skin care regime can have beautiful and skin healthy results!

1It is important to note that exfoliation can cause irritation or damage to the skin and capillaries if overused or used incorrectly. It is recommended that you seek the advice of a skin care professional to assess your skin type and proper skin care regimen.

“Show Me The Money”- How To Increase Your Day Spa/Medspa Cash Flow

by Heather Elrod, Placécol Corporation USA

Heather ElrodMost of us have heard “manage to the metrics” or “know your financial Key Result Areas”. But let’s face it, how many of us are truly diligent and disciplined in analyzing our business financial statements on a monthly basis? Who really wants to spend time evaluating financial statements, right? This is the perfect chore to procrastinate! But, the reality is that this is perhaps one of the best uses of time as business owners and managers. Your Income Statement or Profit and Loss (P&L) Statement is an incredible weapon in your business management arsenal. Used effectively, it is a blueprint for guiding decision-making around the Key Result Areas of your business: top line revenue and bottom line profit!

Let’s break the P&L Statement into two parts: (note: the Balance Sheet is also critically important for the full “picture” of the business but we will only focus on the P&L for now).

P & LP&L Part I:

1) Revenue

a. Sales by category

i. Services (salon separated from

ii. Retail

iii. Other

2) Cost of Goods Sold

a. By category listed above

b. Service provider salaries are often

3) Gross Profit

a. Revenue -Cost of Goods Sold = Gross

Tip #1: The categorization is important! This shows your sales mix: hair, nails, spa, and retail sales within each category. Knowing your sales mix should guide marketing tactics, incentive plans, purchases, staffing levels, etc.

Tip #2: retail sales can greatly improve cash flow. This is often a neglected aspect of the business! The industry targets retail sales of 30% but we rarely see retail sales anywhere close to that percentage. In fact, most P & L Statements that we have evaluated show retail sales at single digit, less than 10%! The focus is generally skewed on services over retail but retail sales are a quick and easy way to increase sales and profit. In fact, we have seen retail sales turn Day Spas with negative cash flow into positive cash flow. Your profit on your retail products should be at least 50% (if not, you have the wrong vendor partners). There are unique tactics increasing retail sales that we will discuss in the workshop at the Day Spa Expo.

P&L Part II:

1) Operating Expens

i. All other expenses (e.g. Administrative Salaries, Marketing/Advertising, Rent, etc)

Tip #3: The most common expense categories that we see out of alignment and eating away profits are: 1) Salaries, 2) Supplies (general and back bar), and 3) Marketing/Advertising (for medspas: add malpractice insurance and repairs/maintenance to the list).

There are relatively simple ways to control these variable expenses but the first step is to know where you stand in these categories by taking a hard look at your P&L Statement. We’ll look at sample P&Ls, discuss targeted performance, and share best practices for increasing cash flow in our workshop at the Expo. We hope to see you there!

Indulge Spa and Lucca Salon Join the Placécol USA Family

In these tough financial times it might not seem prudent to invest in a new line of Spa treatments and products – Even if the company is not “new” at all and has been the leading company in its industry for over twelve years in South Africa and recently launched in the United States.

In fact, in a recent study conducted by ISPA’s 2009 U.S. Spa Industry Update indicate spa revenues were up almost 18 percent in 2008 from the previous year to $12.8 billion! It would seem that, in this economy, we could probably all use a little pampering — a massage, a facial, a pedicure or perhaps a nice soak in a hot whirlpool – Especially if, along with the pampering, you see improvement in your skin’s health and appearance.

And so, we would like to feature two new members of the Placécol USA family – Two daring companies (among others) who took a chance on Placécol and are succeeding because of it – even in these uncertain times!

Indulge Spa, St. Augustine, FL

The warm sages and chocolate browns which adorn Indulge Spa in St. Augustine, FL suggest the healing and serenity of nature before you even “indulge” in one of their treatments.

Indulge has just begun carrying the Placécol line and are just a few months into their treatments. Already they are getting overwhelming feedback on the clinically-tested Platinum Anti-Aging line, and sold out of their initial stock of Renaissance line in the first weekend Renaissance is the Placécol range which is uniquely formulated specifically for women with skin of color).

Lindsay Navin, the spa’s original owner was a Financial Adviser in Boston, MA before opening Indulge Spa in 2007. She’s been a licensed esthetician for ten years.  After successfully selling her spa recently, Lindsay became a customer just in time for the new owners to start integrating the Placécol line of products and treatments.

“I love all of the Platinum products, especially the Oxygenating Serum,” says Lindsay, “I also love the Advanced Vitamin E serum…it feels like silk on the skin.”

In fact Lindsay was so pleased with her own Placécol experience; she became the Placécol Area Distributor for the Northern Florida region! Lindsay claims, “Skin care is my passion, and I am so excited about working with such a high quality line that is brand new to this country.”

LUCCA Salon, Bonsall, CA

All the way on the other side of the country in Bonsall, CA is another multi-service salon whose stucco and red tiled roof seem to reflect the romance of the quaint Tuscan city of Lucca; after which it was named

Lucca Salon, Bonsall, CA

While this booming salon has mostly offered hair styling services, they have just started offering facials and other spa services to their regular customers – And they chose Pacécol for their maiden voyage.

Holly Scheffer and Jamie King are the estheticians at Lucca. “I have been at Lucca for 3 years, an Esthetician and Massage Therapist for 13 years, and have worked in the Spa industry for 10,” notes Holly, “Jamie and I wanted to offer more services to our clients who come to get their hair done. So, we set up a room especially for Facials and Waxing.”

“So far we have received great feedback from Placécol’s exclusive Photo Bio-Stimulation Facial.  Our clients really like this facial and we love performing it!! Placécol’s Photo Bio-Stimulation Treatment itself does wonders in just one treatment and the products really are a bonus.” Holly points out the before and after photos she and Jamie have been taking. “The treatment I did to obtain the results in the photos was a series of 4 Photo Bio-Stimulation facials spaced one week apart. Pretty good I would say!” – It’s clear she’s pleased with even just the initial results from the Placécol treatments.

Let’s backtrack for a minute and define what this facial really is: Placécol’s Photo Bio-Stimulation Facial is scientifically- proven to rejuvenate, oxygenate, increase blood flow, and increase cell turnover in your body and, its largest organ, your skin!  It is also anti-inflammatory and enables your body to produce collagen to the areas treated.  The result is younger-looking, healthy, and glowing skin!  In addition, Placécol’s Photo Bio-stimulation Facial treatment is a great value; it typically costs the same or only slightly above a traditional facial and 30 minute and 60 minute options are available.

As for the products Holly is most impressed with?  “I would say that I really love the Hydro Firm mask from the Platinum line”, Holly concludes, “It is the perfect mask to use right after the Photo Bio-Stimulation Treatment as it really hydrates the skin well. Not to mention it smells wonderful! I also love the cleansers and the Arnica Gel Mask (a special cooling mask used during the Photo Bio-Stimulation Treatment) ”

Placécol’s Cellulite Treatment in SHAPE Magazine

cellulite_treatment-smallThe clothes have come off and eek, they’re still there! Those lumps and bumps we’ve hidden so beautifully under layers during winter are back in the limelight. But before you reach for the tights and tracksuit, there’s hope: scientists have identified a new cellulite enemy and now that we know what it is, we’ve a better chance of winning the war.

According to some laboratory gurus, cellulite is a consequence of skin that is “damaged”. Dr Daniel Maes, Estèe Lauder’s senior vice president of Global Research and Development, says tiny holes appear in the collagen of damaged skin where fats, toxins and fluids then wedge themselves, causing the skin to “cave in”.

Dermatologist Dr Howard Murad blames hormones for the damage. They “attack” the collagen, causing it to harden. This inhibits blood supply and eventually the skin becomes weak and damaged. Fat cells then push and poke through, causing those tell-tale lumps and bumps.

The answer then is for healthy, strong skin to keep fat cells where they belong, so the hunt is on for ingredients that plump up, repair and tighten the skin, creating a smooth and natural “girdle” to keep cellulite in shape.

Not surprisingly, the skin-strengthening ingredients which work successfully in protecting and stimulating collagen growth in facial skincare products, are now showing up in anti-cellulite formulas. Look out for products and treatments with potent concentrations of retinoids, peptides, and amino acids like carnitine and creatine.

Caffeine is an undisputed champion of the cellulite wars: a study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology reveals that a cream containing only seven percent caffeine can dramatically improve the orange-peel look, while eight out of 10 women using a caffeine-rich product for a month claimed that their skin became tighter and they lost up to two centimetres off their thighs. The reason caffeine works is because it contains theophylline, a chemical which blocks the enzymes in fat that prevent the body from flushing it out.

Our pick of the best cellulite blasters around include: RoC Retinol Body Range Retinol Anti-Cellulite Intensive with retinol, forskolin – an Indian root long used in Ayurvedic medicine, which triggers lipolysis, causing fat cells to shrink, caffeine and carnitine; Placécol Advanced Body Care Cellulite and Firming Treatment, with coffee, ginger and arnica to stimulate, rejuvenate and firm; Dermaphuzion Serum Anti-Cellulite Firming Gel contains forskolin; Dior Plasticity Body Beautifying Micro-Peel; Comfort Zone Body Strategist Refiner Cellulite; Anesi Soin Du Corps Draining-Shaping Cream; Thalgo LC24 Concentrate Slimming Booster 24hr Caffeine Effect; Avon Anew Clinical Lift and Tuck Professional Body Shaper and Annique Cellulite Decrease Green Rooibos Cellulite Cream.

I’m skinny. Why do I have cellulite?
Female hormones and lifestyle are to blame. Our diet, smoking, drinking, drugs (prescription and otherwise) and lack of exercise all contribute to the build-up of toxins responsible for the formation of cellulite.

Why don’t men get cellulite?
Apart from the fact that men are literally more thick-skinned, the male hormone testosterone seems to stop cellulite from forming. The female hormone oestrogen triggers it, and many women encounter cellulite for the first time after starting the Pill, HRT or with pregnancy.

Why is my overweight friend cellulite-free
Cellulite is not a fat issue, you should not blame your weight. Even if you have the body of a supermodel, you can still have cottage cheese thighs.

My mother and sister have cellulite. Is it hereditary?
Hormones and lifestyle play a much stronger role in the formation of cellulite than your genes.

Does cellulite get worse with age?
Yes, age plays a role. Aging results in a loss of thickness and tone of the connective tissue within the dermis and the superficial fat layer. Loss of collagen and elastin results in damaged and aging skin.

Does stress play a role?
Stress and lack of exercise will make your body sluggish. Stress causes high levels of cortisol which contributes to a slowing down of blood circulation and the lymphatic system, which helps your body get rid of toxins causing cellulite. Exercise is one of the best ways to deal with stress.

How do I know if I have cellulite?
You can tell if you have cellulite by squeezing the skin of your upper thigh between your thumb and forefinger. If it feels and looks lumpy and bumpy, it is cellulite. You might also find that cellulite patches look paler and feel colder.

Will exercise help?
Exercise tones and improves circulation, so it will definitely help to improve the appearance of cellulite-affected areas and help to smooth the dimples, even if they don’t disappear al-together. When you work out, the blood flow through the arteries increases, circulation gets a boost and, as you build muscle, the cellulite becomes less obvious.

Which exercise is best?
Your best bet is to choose a form of exercise that you enjoy, says sports scientist Kathleen Mc Quaide. “Incorporate both cardiovascular (aerobic) and some resistance exercise (toning). The resistance exercises will tone the muscles beneath the fat layers, and these will be more visible when some of the fat is lost. Resistance exercises also increase your lean tissue (muscle mass). Muscle tissue burns up more energy than fat tissue, which results in an increase in your metabolic rate.” All of this should translate into a leaner, more toned, less dimpled you!

How can diet make a difference?
A healthy diet of protein, good fats and antioxidants from plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables is good for your skin. Protein (fish, chicken and eggs) is rich in hydrating essential fatty acids which restore tone and firmness to skin, says Dr Howard Murad in his book The Cellulite Solution (Piatkus). Cut out junk food which is stuffed with fat and sugar and limit your salt intake, which can cause water retention.

Will it help if I get a suntan?
A tan can camouflage that pasty cottage cheese look and create the optical illusion of smoothness and tone, BUT make it self-tan and don’t let the sun do the job. We now know that cellulite-ridden skin is damaged skin. Overexposure to the sun will further damage and weaken skin and encourage the appearance of even more – and – worse cellulite. And no, the heat doesn’t melt away the lumps. Sorry!

Does exfoliation help to smooth dimply thighs?
Brushing skin with a soft brush in long, sweeping movements towards the heart revs circulation and gets rid of dead skin cells, leaving skin rosy and glowing. Don’t be tempted to go at the offensive areas with a loofah – dermatologists warn that you can scratch the skin and even risk infection. Using an exfoliating product prepares skin to be optimally responsive to a cellulite cream or treatment following your bath or shower. Blitz hips and thighs with a high-powered shower jet, alternating hot and cold water.

Is cellulite cream a waste of money?
No. If the formulation contains the latest skincare ingredients which help to restore thick and healthy skin, you should see better skin tone and texture within weeks. You should also apply it with a vigorous and strong massage movement to stimulate circulation; use firm, strong strokes, massaging upwards to help chase toxins towards the lymph glands so they can be flushed out. Dr Murad says creams will work on 20 percent of the problem, but the rest relies on lifestyle changes.

Do supplements help?
Dr Murad suggests lecithin, glucosamine and amino acids. Antioxidants and fatty acids like omega-3 also do good. At least six cups of green tea per day have strong antioxidant and healing properties; keep the caffeine limited to the ingredient in your anti-cellulite cream!

First Ever Acne Awareness Month – June 2009

Clarifying Complex Gel
Clarifying Complex Gel

Placécol from South Africa offers ground-breaking products, unique ingredients and indigenous African extracts to treat the cause and effects of acne.

Acne is a disorder of the skin caused by inflammation of the skin glands and hair follicles.  There are three main causes of acne: overproduction of sebum, clogged pores from dirt and debris of dead skin cells, and infection from bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes) in the sebaceous gland.

In controlling active acne gentle washing is important and exfoliating, which removes the layer of dead skin cells and helps reduce dead skin cells and debris which can clog pores and cause more acne.

Often, the problem in treating active acne lies in the products themselves. Many of the over the counter solutions for acne treatment and care contain very harsh additives and ingredients which may treat but may also irritate the delicate skin and underlying tissue.

At Placécol we are committed to the purity and excellence of our products. Each ingredient is selected carefully and researched for efficacy as well as possible reactive elements and only when our Chief Cosmetic Scientist has approved the release of a product is it introduced to the market.

Placécol’s skin care products for Oily/Problem skin make a complete and holistic regimen for acne treatment and control. From cleansing to moisturizing and special care, the products are strong but, because they are comprised of natural elements, they are soothing and gentle – each step of regimen is formulated to treat and then restore the skin.

Included in the line are two key products, the Light Moisture Care day lotion and the Clarifying Complex Gel. The Light Moisture Care lotion has a very light consistency and contains Sesame Seedwith natural polyphenols that lead to a long-lasting reduction in oiliness. It helps regulate oil production especially in the T-zone area. Regular use will result in reduced greasiness, smooth skin and improved skin appearance.  It contains a balanced combination of natural phytosterols that assist in inhibiting the formation of 5 alpha reductase, which is responsible for overproduction of sebum. Because of the mixture of plant extracts such as Chamomile, Coltsfoot, Rosemary, Sage and Melissa this gentle lotion has an astringent effect while it is soothing to the skin.

Our Clarifying Complex Gel does just that; it clarifies the skin with encapsulated Tea Tree Leaf Oil, which is derived from an Australian native plant. As it is slowly released into the skin, the broad-spectrum anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory have an antiseptic affect on the skin and reduce skin reactions. This gel acts as a mild exfoliator to help prevent dead skin cells from causing future clogging of the pores. While Placécol’s Clarifying Complex Gel clarifies it also soothes with the same mixture of plant extracts as the Light Moisture Care lotion.

Along with using the Placécol line of products for problem skin, we also recommend our VitaLite C Serum, which contains a stable Liposome Vitamin Cform of Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate. This powerful anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory is effectively transported into the skin, where it serves as a radical scavenger. Vitamin C acts as cofactor in the synthesis of collagen and helps to inhibit the synthesis of melanin that so often leads to uneven skin tone and pigmentation.

From our line of serums we recommend our Purifying Booster Serum which also contains Tea Tree Leaf Oil. The Arnica Montana Flower Extract makes this serum effective on acne in a stimulating but non-irritating way.

Of all the skin disorders, acne is perhaps the most difficult and certainly the most common in the US; affecting 40–50 million Americans at any one time. According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) almost 80% of our population will experience some form of acne during their lifetimes.

Essence Magazine Offers Insight on African-American Women’s Beauty Market

Posted: May 14, 2009

A study by Essence magazine, in conjunction with Vision Critical Group, shows that African-American women spend nearly twice as much on skin care annually than the general market.

Essence magazine shared the results of its proprietary study, Smart Beauty IV (developed in conjunction with New York-based research firm Vision Critical Group) at the fourth installment of the Smart Beauty series. Presented at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in New York City, the study focuses on African-American women and the prestige beauty category, and a panelist discussion that analyzed the attitudes and purchase behaviors of the modern African-American beauty consumer.

“Essence’s Smart Beauty research confirms that African-American women are confident and aspirational; embracing and celebrating their unique beauty to the fullest,” says Mikki Taylor, beauty and cover director, Essence. “As trendsetters, African-American women enjoy the beauty experience and are loyal consumers, who trust prestige brands to deliver the quality they expect.”

Designed to educate, inform and inspire change in marketing to women of color by identifying their buying power, influence, needs and desires, the research methodology for Smart Beauty IV included online surveys among a national sample of African-American women and general market women, 18–54 years old. The sample of more than 1,500 included a mix of women who used branded beauty products and have shopped at a prestige store for a cosmetic, skin care or hair care beauty product in the past six months.

Highlights of Smart Beauty IV:

  • Regarding spending power: African-American women spend 80% more on cosmetics annually and nearly twice as much on skin care products than general market women do annually.
  • Regarding marketing to African-American women vs. general market women: A brand she aspires to (48%) is a more important attribute than one with an appealing celebrity endorsement (33%) when choosing a beauty product.
  • Regarding the mindset of African-American women: Her self-confidence is evident in describing herself as intelligent, independent, attractive, ambitious, sexy and fabulous more often than general market women.
  • Regarding what informs the purchase decision for African-American women: Reflecting her personal style, being a brand she trusts, offering high-quality ingredients and being suited to her needs all stand out as key attributes to compel purchase across cosmetic, skin and hair categories respectively.
