Spring Skin: Top Skin Care Ingredients

Totalbeauty.com recently published an article on top skin care ingredients. Let’s take a look at the top tier (in no particular order) and SkinPhD’s products containing these ingredients.
1. Ceramides
What they do: Ceramide is the main component of the stratum corneum of the epidermis layer of human skin. Together with cholesterol and saturated fatty acids, ceramides create a water-impermeable, protective layer to prevent excessive water loss due to evaporation as well as a barrier against the entry of microorganisms. With aging there is a decline in ceramide and cholesterol in the stratum corneum. Ceramides are related to our #2 ingredient…
2. Niacinamide
What it does: A form of Vitamin B3, Niacinamide can stimulate new collagen synthesis and up-regulates epidermal ceramide synthesis with concurrent epidermal barrier benefits.  Niacinamide is also clinically known to treat pigmented lesions and, through its anti-inflammatory agents, effectively treats acne and rosacea.

3. Grape Seed/Grape Stem Cell
What it does: High in antioxidant properties, polyphenols, and resveratrol that significantly reduce free-radical damage and combat wrinkles, this ingredient is a powerhouse for anti-aging.

4. Mineral Hematite
What it does: This mineral, known for its energy and high in iron, reinforces the mechanical properties of the skin and rebuilds the fibril network. It helps to re-densify the
epidermis and fights against thinning of the skin. Mineral Hematite is more effective at Type I Collagen Production than is Retinol.

5. Retinol
What it does: Retinol is Vitamin A; it promotes the enzyme activity in the skin, thickens the epidermis, increases collagen resulting in improved texture and enhanced barrier function.

6. Linoleic/ linolenic acids
What they do: These fatty acids replenish the skin’s intercellular matrix and act as a protector. They contain a natural tocopherol concentrate as antioxidant and make the skin look younger while giving it a radiant shine.  They soothe dry skin and have anti-inflammatory properties.

Day Care Lotion

SkinPhD Cosmeceutical Day Care Lotion has Linoleic/ linolenic acids and is clinically-endorsed for sensitivity

7.  Hydrolyzed Soy Protein
What it does: Extracted from GMO-free soybean, this regenerative active is obtained by gentle hydrolysis ensuring a balanced composition in peptides (rich in essential amino-acids). By increasing the cell energetic potential, it stimulates cellular renewal, thereby helping improve skin radiance. Studies show that these derivatives inhibit environmental damage, reduce irritation, improve skin texture, build collagen and fight sun damage.  SkinPhD products that include non-GMO soy protein:

8. Vitamin C
What it does: A free radical scavenger, Vitamin C activates collagen synthesis and influences the metabolism of amino acids. It inhibits the synthesis of melanin that leads to even tone and lighter pigmentation while protecting the cells against UV-damages by scavenging free radicals and preventing the lipids from peroxidase. Encapsulated Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate is a very stable form of Vitamin C.  SkinPhD Products with Vitamin C

9. Alpha Hydroxy Acids
What they do: They work mainly as an exfoliant. They cause the cells of the epidermis to become “unglued” allowing the dead cells to slough off, making room for regrowth of new skin. AHA may even stimulate the production of collagen and elastin. The following are the five major types of alpha hydroxy acids found in skincare products and their sources:
•glycolic acid – sugar cane
•lactic acid – milk
•malic acid – apples and pears
•citric acid – oranges and lemons
•tartaric acid – grapes

AHAs are reported to improve wrinkling, roughness and mottled pigmentation of photodamaged skin after months of daily application.
AHA have been shown to promote smoother, younger looking skin by increasing the rate of cell renewal.

Ingredients Haul: Peptides

skinphd2Peptides often play the star role in many anti- aging products, but  do they really deserve the spotlight? Let’s find out!

What are peptides?

In a nutshell, peptides are small chains of amino acids.  Amino Acids are what proteins  are made of.  As we get older  the skin produces less of a protein called collagen.  Collagen is a primary contributor to young supple skin.  Theoretically, once these small chains of amino acids are applied to skin,  it prompts cells to make more amino acid chains, in order to make a complete protein, or to complete the collagen sequence.

Are peptides effective?

Research has proven peptides are among the most effective at increasing collagen production, but not on its own, and at varied doses of application; you need a skin care cocktail to get the best results including ingredients that improve the fibroblasts and texture of the skin.

Bottom line?

Peptides are not the fountain of youth, but will help retain wrinkle-free skin if you start application early enough.  Most experts agree that a good time to start an anti-aging skin regiment is in your 30s, but for smokers, drinkers, or people who tan a lot, I’d recommend as early as 25 to get started.  The bottom line is,  peptides are a helper, but like most things, nothing takes the place of good health.

Peptides: What are they really, and the top three ways to get the best results from them

What is a peptide?

A peptide is literally a chain of amino acids that are chemically linked together; a chain of 50 or more peptides would then be considered a protein, of which there are many types.

What does this mean for our skin?

Collagen is the protein that gives the skin its elasticity.  Collagen, like all forms of protein, is made of peptides, which are made of amino acids.  Once collagen breaks down into peptide links, the body is supposed to make more peptides to complete the link and form the collagen protein again.  As we encounter skin damage, whether it be from aging, ultra-violet sun damage, or even skin disorders;  the body may loose its ability to make the peptides needed quick enough in order to combat damage.

Topically applied peptides are small enough to break through the skin’s protective barrier.  In a sense, when you apply peptides directly to your skin, you “trick” the body into making additional peptides at a quicker rate in order to fill what is needed to make a complete protein chain.

How do you make peptides work for your skin in order to see the best results?

  1. The best way to do this is to make yourself healthy. A healthy body will always keep you looking and feeling younger, so make nutrition, and exercise apart of your daily beauty regiment.
  2. The earlier you start using peptides,  the better this practice will work for you. It’s important that you start healthy skin habits at a young age (around 30s-late 20s) in order to retain the beautiful skin you were born with.
  3. It’s important that the products you use not only include peptides, but also include ingredients that promote skin health.  Not all peptides are created equal, and it’s important that your skincare promote healthy skin cells in order to see maximum results.

SkinPhD Platinum – Ingredients for Optimal Aging

Casey Durrett, Social Media Manager, SkinPhD

by Casey Durrett, LEI – Social Media Director and National Educator, SkinPhD

The first step in an anti-aging skin care regimen is selecting products with optimal ingredients. Optimal ingredients produce Optimal Aging, and SkinPhD’s Platinum range has been formulated with this truth in mind. Our Platinum products for mature skin contain multi-functional complexes of actives that address the key factors in aging skin.

As a cosmeceutical range, SkinPhD Platinum products are biologically active and promote beneficial changes in the appearance of fine lines, deep wrinkles, skin tone and texture, and overall radiance. The Platinum range consists of specialized daily skin care products including targeted treatments for the delicate eye area and unique anti-aging, firming, and protective serums.

In working with aging skin, I often find that long-term use of many anti-aging products results in a new set of skin concerns. These often include redness, flakiness, increased UV sensitivity, thinning of the skin’s important protective barrier, and irritation. There is a prominent misconception in the beauty industry that aggression produces better results. This is simply untrue.  The skin is a living, functioning organ, and as with any other major organ of the body, if you constantly attack it and deprive it of critical nutrition, damge will be the result.

SkinPhD Platinum nourishes, protects, and creates definite, positive changes in the skin without compromising skin health. This approach is critical to creating lasting improvement in the skin’s appearance.

Today I’ll walk you through the selection of products in the Platinum range and introduce you to the ingredients that make Platinum the best answer for Optimal Aging.
