Treating Acne with Diet and Effective Skin Care

Laura Hunnewell-cropped

by Laura Hunnewell, LE, Contributing Writer, SkinPhD Trainer

Treating acne can be confusing and frustrating- it hits us as teens, later in life as adults, some struggle their entire lives to treat acne and to prevent it. Seeking medical advice for diagnostic purposes should be your first step as to eliminate any medical concerns that could be causing your acne. Certain prescriptions for the skin can be irritating and drying. Harsh soaps can strip the skin causing dehydration which aggravates acne.

South African Honeybush

The SkinPhD® Clarify line was formulated to help fight acne and maintain healthy skin. It includes South African Honeybush extract, which is known for possessing anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, and anti-viral properties. Additionally it contains minerals such as iron potassium, calcium copper zinc magnesium and sodium and helps prevent irritation. The natural antioxidants found in Honeybush extract help to protect the skin from damage caused by free radicals and have an antiaging effect. The extract used in SkinPhD® formulations is organic and pure and contains no harmful substances.
Remember that even though your skin is breaking out, you still need hydration. Dehydration leads to irritation and flare-ups with acneic skin. If you are looking for a deeper cleanse try using a Clarisonic with the Clarify Gel Cleanser or a hot steam towel for evening cleansing.

Restore the skin’s pH level with the Clarify Toner spritzed directly on the face or on a cotton round or square. Finish with Clarify Light Day and Night Cream. The Clarify Toner and Light Day/Night Cream contain ACNACIDOL BG – a naturally occurring hydroxyl acid found in royal jelly combined with Sebacic Acid and 10-Decanediol. This active has significant impact on hyperseborrea, P-acnes and active sebaceous glands. Double-blind studies show a reduction

(-176%) of active sebum spots and a reduction of (-392%) active sebaceous excretions within 1-hour period. The anti-bacterial capacity of the actives, strongly reduce the bacteria and micro-organisms measured during the study. These effects lasted for 28 days after the trial. Don’t pick because you don’t want to spread the bacteria to other areas on the face or create scarring. Remember, a routine is key to maintaining healthy skin.

Diet and Acne: A study published in the February 2013 Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/02/130220084809.htm reviewed various clinical studies on diet and acne between 1960 and 2012 and determined that there is increasing evidence of a connection between diet and acne, particularly dairyfrom high glycemic load diets (refined and white foods -not whole grains- bread, rice, cereal, pasta, sugar, and flour products) and dairy products.
In addition, there is growing evidence that adding a probiotic to your diet can help calm inflammation with acne. While this hasn’t been proven, it certainly can’t hurt as well as maintaining a healthy diet of lots of fresh vegetables and lower dairy and sugar intake.

Three reasons why body soap can be harmful to the skin on your face

clar_gel_cleanserI know  a lot of women (I being one of them), who use one washing cloth for the face, and another for the body.  In good hygiene this makes sense, but why don’t we use two different cleansers: one for our face and one for our body?  Whatever body wash you use, I’m sure makes your body feel clean, but here are three real reasons why you need a different cleanser for you face.

1. Body cleansers contain water softeners that irritate skin and leave the face feeling and looking dry.

2. The skin on the face is not as rough as the skin on the body. The surfactants in regular body soaps are too harsh, and strip the skin on your face of much needed natural moisturizers.

3. Body soaps often contain added coloring and perfume that might not irritate the skin on your body, but are especially irritating to the skin on the face.  Even people with skin disorders like eczema or psoriasis are recommended not to use these types of soaps.

honeybushYour face needs a cleanser that is mild, that doesn’t strip the skin of it’s natural oils, and that can help the skin on your face look better over time. Honeybush for its therapeutic properties and for its potent mineral and anti-oxidant materials. The Gel Cleanser, a part of the Skin PhD Clarify line,  is a great face wash made for everyday use.  Its made from a blend of fruit extracts that  nourish the skin while you cleanse.  The African  Honeybush plays the lead role, in this cleanser, for its therapeutic properties, potent mineral and anti-oxidants.  To learn more about this face wash, click here.

New SkinPhD Ranges featuring Honeybush and Zincite

by Casey Durrett, LEI – Social Media Director and National Educator, SkinPhD

SkinPhD is unveiling several new product ranges this summer that target very specific skin care concerns. These new product ranges include our Platinum range that centers on Optimal Aging and our Clarify range that improves the challenges often seen in oily skin types.

I’m so thrilled to be writing this blog! Why? Because I’m so fond of the new SkinPhd Platinum and Clarify formulations and I want to share my excitement with you!  Working in the skin care industry means that I’m exposed to many different product and treatment options on an on-going basis. My philosophy in skin care is that we must provide positive change in the appearance of the skin without creating negative side effects and without damaging or creating an imbalance in the skin. Oddly enough, this can actually be a tricky feat for skin therapists. A number of professional treatments and product actives may create a positive effect in the skin, but when used in excess or improperly these same treatments and ingredients can be highly aggressive and detrimental to skin health. I believe we find these types of actives and treatments most abundantly in the anti-aging and oil-control/breakout realms, and this is why I’m thrilled about the new SkinPhD Platinum and SkinPhD Clarify ranges.

SkinPhD Platinum and SkinPhD Clarify will improve challenging skin care concerns without compromising skin health. In fact, these products will encourage the integrity of the skin! Let’s now look at these two ranges and a couple of the ingredients that make them unique.

SkinPhD Clarify is developed for clients who have oily and challenging skin.

A key feature of this product range is the Honeybush plant – a natural anti-bacterial and anti-fungal plant from the Cape of South Africa. Honeybush is a close cousin to the well-known Rooibos plant. Often consumed as a tea, Honeybush is characterized by a sweet, honey-like scent.

In our Clarify line, Honeybush not only reduces levels of bacteria in the skin but also provides other layers of protection much needed by oily and problem-prone skin – including anti-inflammatory activity and antioxidant protection.

Key features of Honeybush:

  • Anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral
  • Limits the growth and reproduction of Propionibacterium Acnes (P. acnes) – the bacteria associated with breakouts
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Contains minerals including iron, potassium, calcium, copper, zinc, manganese, and sodium
  • Improves skin healing and reduces irritation
  • Rich in polyphenol antioxidants
  • Gentle, non-sensitizing

SkinPhD Platinum is a cosemceutical range formulated for mature skin that is experiencing dryness, changes in hormone levels, fine lines, and wrinkles.

In addition to living plant cells, peptides, and patented collagen-building actives, this range contains Zincite – a zinc carbonate that may be found in an array of colors. The use of zinc dates back to ancient times when the Chinese used the mineral to reduce scarring.

Modern science has come to know zinc as an important mineral in the activity of over 200 enzymes. Zinc also plays an important role in every biological component related to growth and development.

Key Features of Zincite:

  • Plays a vital role in DNA and RNA metabolism – without zinc, cell division ceases
  • Assists in elastin and collagen synthesis
  • Protects DNA
  • Increases cellular repair
  • Suitable for daily application
  • Provides constant cellular protection against environmental stress
  • Improves skin elasticity and texture
  • Accelerates the renewal of skin cells
  • Reduces MMP-related collagen degradation
  • Non-iritating

As you looked over these featured ingredients did you notice the multiple-benefits they both possess? These are the types of ingredients we at SkinPhD love! As nearly all skin care concerns are related to multiple factors within the skin, we require ingredients with multi-faceted functions to truly create a positive environment for healthy change in the skin’s appearance.

SkinPhD Platinum and Clarify are full of sensible, suitable, effective ingredients and will deliver the results our clients demand.

As a cosmeceutical range, our products rely on bio-active ingredients to produce beneficial changes in the appearance of the skin. Bio-active ingredients work beyond the skin’s surface to create true change. Some benefits of bio-active ingredients include increased cellular renewal and regeneration, improved barrier function, and the stabilization of collagen and elastin. In addition to our existing product ranges, SkinPhD will be launching an exciting new selection of products intended to clarify problem skin. This range will feature a powerful yet natural purifying ingredient – Honeybush. Honeybush is a sibling of Rooibos and is cultivated in South Africa’s Eastern Cape region.
